OBJECT FACTORY:
THE ART OF INDUSTRIAL CERAMICS

With surgical precision and spatial sophistication, small objects used in everyday life are displayed as works of art within a clear, colorful graphic concept.

The exhibition explores three different groupings of porcelain art by fine artists, ceramic artists, and designers—some lyrical, some skeptical, and some that challenge the premise of the medium entirely using new technologies. The rich blue of the exhibition design harkens to traditional Delftware.

The artwork is positioned in silhouette against this rich blue hue—a strategy that highlights form given the consistency in materiality and use of white glaze. Given that the museum’s desire to recycle the casework for future exhibitions, each element of display is constructed to be easily changed in character, height and bonnet. A linear platform and shelving give the gallery an expansive feeling while unifying the multitude of diverse pieces. Pedestals with bonnets could be divided by a diagonal or orthogonal partitions of changing color and materiality to change the artistic palette.

Meeting the challenge that a great diversity of artifacts and artists can produce a disjointed visual experience, Studio Joseph’s careful design and attention to sightlines created coherence and a unified curatorial narrative.
